Who publishes the tool

Localex is a free tool by Avlex, legal AI for Belgian lawyers. It is published by Avlex Belgium SRL, a company based in Brussels.

The tool is independent of the Avlex platform. It requires no account and does not redirect you to Avlex.

Why it exists

AI is entering law firms, but professional secrecy applies in full. The OVB and AVOCATS.BE guidelines (January 2025) ask lawyers to pseudonymise personal data before submitting it to an AI tool.

Generic tools handle Belgian documents poorly: national register numbers, enterprise numbers, structured payment references, surnames in capitals, phrases such as "domicilié à", "wonende te" or "wohnhaft in". Localex is designed for these documents, in French, Dutch and German, and so that nothing leaves your device.

What it does

  • It detects personal and identifying data, including Belgian identifiers validated by their check digits.
  • It replaces them, as you choose, with tokens, initials, generalisations or redaction bars.
  • It requires a review and scans every exported file before it leaves the tool.
  • It puts the original values back into an AI's answer, using an encrypted key that stays with you.

What it does not do

  • It does not send your documents: not to Avlex, not to any online AI.
  • It does not guarantee exhaustive detection. Review is up to you.
  • It does not check the legal content of an AI answer.
  • It does not give legal advice.
  • It has not been assessed or recommended by any bar. It is designed following the OVB and AVOCATS.BE AI guidelines: see the detailed mapping.

How it is funded

Avlex offers the tool. Its core is free and needs no account. The AI features, case-file mode, firm profiles and the certificate are free as well: you unlock them by verifying your e-mail address.

When you unlock, you can agree, separately for each topic, to receive news from Avlex or a call presenting its platform. These boxes are never pre-ticked, and unlocking depends on none of them. This is how Avlex becomes known to the lawyers who want to hear from it.
